The First Children of Breast Cancer Foundation® Scholarship Recipient:

Our first Children of Breast Cancer Foundation® scholarship recipient Ginny Straub is headed to the University of Tennessee-Knoxville this fall after graduating from the Chattanooga School for Arts and Sciences in May 2003.

No doubt, she’ll be sporting (BIG!) ORANGE next time we see her!

Here is an excerpt from one of Ginny’s essays explaining what this Children of Breast Cancer scholarship would mean to her:

“As I embark on a new beginning in my life, this scholarship would open new doors for me. I am currently living with my newly created family of six, which is a joy day in and day out. My oldest and only biological sibling began college in the Fall of 2001. I am the second oldest of the four children in our family, and the next to be bound for college in 2003. My new step-sister follows quickly at my heels, entering the college life in 2004. Then we have another brother that will eventually be going to college as well (he is only seven now). As one can easily see, this is a great financial pressure on our parents.

This scholarship could definitely widen my range of college choices and help me enter into a school that I may be more interested in, as opposed to attending a school merely because it is one that my family can afford. But as important as the financial help might be, the scholarship holds a more important meaning for me. The scholarship pays tribute to the women (who have had breast cancer) and their families. Sometimes it is hard to express just how sorry we are for others misfortune and pain. I understand that this scholarship reflects others understanding about our loss and I appreciate the tribute to my mother.”

Applicant's Words:

"I have tried to adjust to being the mom of my household. Every morning I get my 6-year-old sister and 10- year- old brother ready for school to catch the bus. I have adjusted to putting others' needs before my own. This is one of the many valuable characteristics which my mother taught me."
