Girls Just Want to Have Fun!
April, 2003 - Chattnooga, TN
The consensus of Children of Breast Cancer Scholarship Fund®
committee members and attendees alike is that the April 6th “Girls
Just Want to Have Fun!” event lived up to its name!
Nearly 500 females ages 4 to 104 converged on the Chattanoogan Hotel
and Convention Center for the Sunday afternoon extravaganza.
A silent auction organized by Christa Potter, Donna Seagle, Kelly
Nation and Karen Schearer displaying approximately 80 items greeted
guests
|
outside the main ballroom. It included a handpainted tea set, original artwork,
dolls and doll furniture, a cigar box purse, lamps, a Karastan rug, stationery,
and just about any kind of ‘girly’ item you can imagine.
Those in between bids managed to sneak in a girlfriend portrait by Lifetouch
Photography in front of a handpainted background of the New York City skyline
from artist Maura Phillips.
Once inside the ball room, guests were seated and heard a heartrending invocation
from mother and Breast Cancer survivor Deb Allen.
Guests were then treated to a fabulous sit down luncheon, topped off with
scrumptious chocolate chip scones and hot tea. Tea bag labels were customized
with the CBCS logo and a Thank You message.

The table décor team of Beth
Phillips and Brooke Moore outdid themselves! The lovely pink hanging
plants adorning each table added to the festive atmosphere, as did
the adorable favor cups (with the CBCS Fund logo) stuffed with goodies
from Masterfoods, and perfumes, nail polish, lip gloss or other
female treats, and topped off with a splash of pink tissue paper.
Sterling silver teapot charms hidden inside the favor cups surprised
one guest at each table of 10 as a door prize. Other lucky guests
found a marked program at each table, entitling them to an oversized
tea cup and saucer planter donated by Proffitts Department Store
at Hamilton Place Mall.

Live music from the very talented and beautiful Contemporary Christian artist
Kate Miner entertained and delighted everyone.
International Humorist Susie Humphreys
took to the stage and wowed the 13 and older crowd, while the younger
set was escorted to an adjoining area for a live, improvisation show
by the comedy troupe Runs With Scissors. The ballroom was ringing
with laughter at every end; Susie’s humor and profoundly inspiring
message had the ladies laughing and crying at the same time! (Truly
the mark of a successful speaker to any female audience!) The younger
set was weak with giggling over the antics of the off-the-wall comedians.
Event co-chairs Billenda Nabors and Elaine Giardino had everyone on
the seat of their chairs anticipating the raffle drawing for a 6 carat
amethyst, sliver and gold ring, a china tea set, and a daffodil tea
set. The announcements made for more oohs and ahhs as the tea winded
down.
The afternoon come to a close with thank yous from founder MaryEllen
Locher and comments from the first CBCS recipient, Ginny Straub.

Applicant's Words:

 |
"I have tried to adjust to being the mom of my household. Every
morning I get my 6-year-old sister and 10- year- old brother
ready for school to catch the bus. I have adjusted to putting
others' needs before my own. This is one of the many valuable
characteristics which my mother taught me." |
